The Ed Switch

The first class I ever taught was in the confines of a doll house, with a sister and 13 other assorted soft toys as my obedient little students.

from then to now, not much has changed- I still love teaching just as much.

It wasn't surprising at all when I decided to switch majors in the middle of an academic year. It has been of the most defining decisions of my life, one that will stay long after the confusion has faded.

Colourful Blossoms

Unsurprisingly, playing teacher-teacher was my part time job along with going to school.

This is where my passionate monologues about why being a teacher is not easy, why we can't have play time all day and why one washroom break is optimal began.

To this day, some of the most profound things me and my one student and stuffed toys have said circle in the walls of that innocent dollhouse.

This inclination was always there, but never more clear to me when in my 10th grade vacations, I volunteered to teach at my village school and ended up conducting a storytelling and basic business workshop from the surrounding villages for a week- each day of which I enjoyed.

Their faces are etched in my brain, they were my first real exposure to classroom, pedagogy and the million questions surrounding it that all teachers navigate everyday.

Pad Yatra

In the summer of 2019, the B.Ed batch at APU embarked upon a pad yatra, a walk through the remote villages of Uttarakhand, visiting schools and meeting teachers. It has been one of the most culturally enriching and meaningful journeys of my life so far

Shantilal Muttha Foundation

In the  summer of 2019, I interned at SMF and undertook two short projects as a data analyst and educator. I worked with data acquired from teacher training program conducted across the country for the 'MulyaVardhan' program that aims holistic teaching, stressing on hygiene, sanitation and being a good citizen. I used the software MAXQDA and Nvivo to give reports on the impact factor of these programs along with a shorter HR project. Time spent here was very enriching.

Karadi Path

Through the late moths of 2019 and early 2020, I volunteered to teach at a local government school in Bangalore and it has been a humbling activity. Lots of questions followed, some introspection and musings on the nature and purpose of Education. Find some of them here.

The entire exercise assures me that I've found my field of liking- I want to be an educator.

Editor

This is a student led publication that originated during the Pandemic to do something within our power to express
solidarity with the world of children during this
crisis. For the first issue, I was the editor of this zine after which we formed a team of editors which I am currently leading. we intend for it to be bi-annual zine.
This zine calls for dialogue, conversations and engagement with a hope that our words will carry our voices and raise concerns that matter to us. It’s our way of saying ‘We care.’

The first issue was widely circulated and you can find it on the official website of Azim Premji University here.

This For a lot of the academic course, there has been a component that requires us to engage with the theory learnt to create resources that can be used by students in classroom settings. Here are two such projects I worked on.

1) Water conservation module. The idea was to include an aesthetic component to learning that will enhance appreciation and understanding of the topic. Meaning-making through these different perspectives can then be accelerated. Find a copy of the aesthetic component that I created for the chapter here

2) Re-imagining an NCERT textbook chapter

We worked on chapter 7: Conservation of plants and animals for grade 8. Find the full reworked chapter here
